I always begin my stories with a question:
what if?

Do you wonder that too?

All the magical trout at the Fishtastic Theater School can breathe on land—except Etta. No matter how hard she tries, Etta cannot unlock her magic. When the theater troupe alights on the banks of the Iowa River to perform their show, Etta finds the trunk of costumes they’ve left behind deep in the depths of the river. Can Etta save the show? How?

“Fishtastic! explores the question of what makes magic and how we know whether we have it or not. . . . Pick this up for any 2-through 7-year olds in your life. It will become beloved.” – Little Village, August 2021

When someone leaves the kitchen window open, Cat jumps in! So begins my tale of an outside cat who explores a tidy house and wreaks havoc in every room.

"Weaver and McCully offer an amusing twist on the saying, 'curiosity killed the cat,' with few words but lots of animated artwork that details the funny feline frenzy. . . . Human and feline foibles are spot-on with a purring finish: That 'someone' isn't seen until the last page." —Starred review, Kirkus Reviews.

Every year Frederick goes to the state fair and enters the contests. While his sister and parents always win ribbons, Frederick loses at everything: Turkey Calling, Checkers, even the Country Music contest. This rollicking story of Frederick's quest to win a prize captures the silly fun of state fairs and ends with a surprising and heartwarming twist.

"Forget about following your dreams and cultivating innate abilities. Read this book with Frederick's brio and it will pay for itself." —Kirkus Reviews

A portrait of children's author Tess Weaver. She smiles at the camera in black glasses and a blue patterned shirt, an outdoor public space behind her.

Hello! I’m a children’s author based in Iowa City, Iowa. My Oppenheim-awarding winning book, Opera Cat, has recently been adapted into a one-act musical.

Aren’t voices magnificent? Each one is so different, as are the ways to tell a story. Perhaps that’s why I wanted to become a writer. To tell stories in my own way.

I grew up the youngest of six children in Coshocton, Ohio, a small town nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians. My brothers and sisters read to me from the time I was a baby. Lucky me!

I studied writing in college and at the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program. I worked many jobs, including monitoring the cherry pitting machines at a pie filling factory, writing book jackets, and editing a scholarly journal. No matter which job I did, I was always scribbling ideas for children’s stories on napkins and the backs of envelopes.

After my husband Greg and I started our family, I decided to get serious about writing for children. Greg likes to tell the story of seeing me write on top of the washing machine in our laundry room: that’s where Opera Cat was born. I could never have dreamed then that Opera Cat would one day be adapted into a musical!

Currently, my husband and I live in Iowa City. Our two sons are now grown and we’re the lucky grandparents of two lively, creative grandchildren. I’m working on a middle grade novel and hope to be able to tell you more about it soon.

Thank you for being here. So many important things happen when you're young. I hope my stories bring you moments of delight as you learn and grow.
